Praying for a Fresh Awareness of God

One of my favorite spiritual insights comes from a Jesuit priest names Carlos Valles, which I first read as a Jesuit novice: “If you always imagine God in the same way, no matter how true and beautiful it may be, you will not be able to receive the gift of new ways he has ready for you.”

We all have set images of God that occasionally need to be shake up, refreshed, even set aside. Perhaps you imagine God only and exclusively as Creator. Maybe the invitation for you is to see God as Consoler, Guide, or Loving Parent.

Or perhaps it’s something more basic that needs to be addressed. Many of us have images of God as the Unforgiving Judge – sometimes based on harsh, judgmental or even cruel parents, teachers, or authority figures in our lives (one friend said she once thought of God as a parole officer). Often, to help people understand God, I ask them, “What was your last experience with God like?” They’ll say, for example, “I felt a sense of calm, peace, and understanding.” I’ll point out that this is God and that their old mental images may need to be set aside. Or I’ll suggest that these old, false images may be an “idol” of sorts that needs to be smashed.

If we were ever asked about the First Commandment’s prohibition against worshiping idols, most of us would scoff. But the “idols” that exist in our mind may not be God. They have to be let go of, so that we can “receive new ways” that God has ready for us.                                                                                          Fr. James Martin, S.J.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
