O Gracious Light
O gracious Light, pure brightness
of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
And our eyes behold the vesper light,
We sing thy praises, O God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Thou art worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life.
And to be glorified through all the worlds.
-Phos Hilaron
Vesper is an old-fashioned word. For a layperson like myself, I evokes images of bird-bones nuns at prayer in convents, or chanting monks in monasteries. But I like old-fashioned words. I try to preserve them in writing. I put them up like jam that may never be opened.
Vesper sounds like “whisper.” It is an apt rhyme for a prayer. Vespers, which comes from the Latin for “evening,” is a formal part of the Liturgy of the Hours. Prayed daily by many Catholics, both lay and consecrated, it continues the Jewish tradition of praying at dusk.
The setting sun transforms brightness of day into onset of night. The vesper light guides us from light to dark, from dusk that leads to dawn. Vesper light remembers day and anticipates night. If I seem preoccupied with the setting of the sun these days, it may be because I’ve just written a book about aging. More sunsets lie behind me that ahead.
