Welcoming the Stranger: Prayer for Hospitality
Loving God, your Son Jesus said
Your kingdom is like a banquet
A festive gathering for all people
Of every race and color –
A table at which the lonely find company,
The hungry savor rich foods and fine wine,
And strangers enjoy warm family ties.
Jesus calls us to build this Kingdom here on earth.
Teach us, Lord, the ways of hospitality.
Give us the spirit of joyful welcome and
The sensitivity to help people on the move
To feel they belong.
Grant that our tables at home may draw our
New neighbors from other lands
Into a loving community
And that the Eucharistic tables in
Our parishes may prefigure that banquet
In heaven where all are one with you,
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
One God, forever and ever. Amen
-Catholic Household Blessings & Prayers

God grant me the serenity
To accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.                                                                                                                                                                                                 – Reinhold Niebuhr

                                                                                                Peace
Many people today are deprived of peace because their attention is dominated by their foreground. They do not realize that peace is actually quite near, but that it is in their background.
Our foreground, what we see and experience at any given time, is not the same as it was for our ancestors. In the past, the foreground might have been limited to family and neighbors in the context of a farm or village. An individual’s foreground expanded as the scope increased with business and travel.
Today, with the explosion of electronic media and the instant availability of news around the globe, our foreground is the whole world – and it is always changing. Whenever we think that things have calmed down and there is nothing to worry about, “Breaking News” brings us back to chaotic reality. What our ancestors would never have known about or would have found out about only after a solution had been found to a problem or crisis, we learn about as it happens.
Dominance of the foreground means that one is never at peace, and can never be at peace, because the foreground is always changing – every moment, every second. Good things are happening all over the world, as well, but they are rarely part of the instant news cycle.
To have peace, one’s life must be dominated not by the foreground but by the background. And what do I mean by that? One’s background, like a backbone, is a stable and unchanging philosophy or faith, an anchor that holds a life together. For Catholics, this background is faith in a loving God and Jesus Christ, our Savior, who govern all reality and is embodied in the sacred Tradition, based on Scripture and enshrined in the Creed. Unlike the foreground, which is always changing, this background is stable and unchanging. We engage completely in the life of the world, but our life is grounded in our unchanging faith. Staying rooted in our background gives us peace, no matter what is going on in the foreground.
God gave our ancestors in faith a way to remain dominated by the background by the institution of the Sabbath. Regularly, the whole community ceases ordinary business and reaffirms the priority of God. All that goes on in daily life and business is good, but it may lead us to think it is essential. Only one thing is necessary: God will take care of us even when we briefly lay down our tools and our control. This Sabbath plan was not only a gift to the Jewish people, but to everyone.
In the rule of St. Benedict, this regular affirmation of the priority of God is provided by the regular return to the Work of God, the Divine Office, several times a day. One’s personal assignment or commitment, the work of the day, is holy and good, but it is secondary to the Work of God. Letting go of our project and turning to God’s project brings us back to the unchanging presence behind the constantly changing world – and restores peace.

This year Bishop Berg is asking that the special collection for the weekend of May 16-17 be used to build a fund for aiding struggling parishes in the diocese. This collection replaces the May 10th special collection envelope for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. That collection was combined with the Black & Indian Missions collection in February. You may use the May 10th special collection envelope for this collection if you like. We are encouraged to follow the example of the early Christian Church who shared their resources for the support of ongoing evangelization and spread of the Gospel.

“When God Created Mothers”
When the Good Lord was creating mothers, He was into His sixth day of “overtime” when the angel appeared and said. “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”
And God said, “Have you read the specs on this order?” She has to be completely washable, but not plastic. Have 180 moveable parts…all replaceable. Run on black coffee and leftovers. Have a lap that disappears when she stands up. A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair. And six pairs of hands.”
The angel shook her head slowly and said. “Six pairs of hands…. no way.”
“It’s not the hands that are causing me problems,” God remarked, “it’s the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have.”
“That’s on the standard model?” asked the angel. God nodded.
“One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, ‘What are you kids doing in there?’ when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn’t but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say. ‘I understand and I love you’ without so much as uttering a word.”
“God,” said the angel touching his sleeve gently, “Get some rest tomorrow….”
“I can’t,” said God, “I’m so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick…can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger…and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower.”
The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. “It’s too soft,” she sighed.
“But tough!” said God excitedly. “You can’t imagine what this mother can do or endure.”
“Can it think?”
Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise,” said the Creator.
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek.
There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told You that You were trying to put too much into this model.”
It’s not a leak,” said the Lord, “It’s a tear.”  “What’s it for?”
“It’s for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride.”
“You are a genius,” said the angel. Somberly, God said, “I didn’t put it there.”- Erma Bombeck

Not this one – When a woman who comes to Life Choices is considering abortion, the person talking with her sends a text requesting a prayer for that mom and baby. If you would like to support a mom in her moment of crisis, please consider joining the prayer text. It simply reads “not this one” when you receive it.

Christ Has No Body But Yours
Christ has no body but yours.
No hands, no feet on earth but yours.
Yours are the eyes through which he looks compassion on this world.
Yours are the feet with which he walks to do good.
Yours are the hands through which he blesses all the world.
Yours are the hands, yours are the feet,
Yours are the eyes, you are his body.
Christ has no body now on earth but yours.
St. Teresa of Avila

Prayer During the Easter Season
Heavenly Father and God of mercy,
We no longer look for Jesus among the dead,
For he is alive and has become the Lord of life.
From the waters of death you raise us with him
And renew your gift of life within us.
Increase in our minds and hearts
The risen life we share with Christ
And help us to grow as your people
Toward the fullness of eternal life with you.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.

                                                                                                                             Praying for Stability
A friend of mine has a funny saying. When even the slightest thing goes wrong- a lost email, a stubbed toe, a dropped fork at a restaurant- he will say, “My whole life is crashing down around me!” It’s his funny way of making light of common problems and reminding himself not to “sweat the small stuff.”

But what happens when it really does feel that your life is “crashing down around you?” In my experience, that feeling surfaces not simply when you are presented with bad news – a frightening medical diagnosis; a layoff at work; grievous academic, professional, or financial failure – but especially when those things happen all at once! And to that mix you might add political, economic, and social unrest as well. Taken together, it can feel like things are indeed “crashing down.”

Even in these times of instability, God is with you. Remember that Jesus himself lived in turbulent times. But how can we access the calm that we long for during unstable times? First, by being honest with your feelings and asking God to give you clarity about how to proceed. But occasionally, that can mire us more deeply in the instability, causing us to focus even more on the problems. In those situations, it may be time simply to take a break with God, to rest in God’s presence and let God give you the gift of calm. – James Martin, SJ

The Seminarian Burse Endowment Fund provides long-term financial resources for the formation and education of seminarians. The average cost per year/per seminarian runs from $40,000 to $50,000. Currently, the Diocese of Pueblo is sponsoring 6 young men who are studying for the priesthood in several locations throughout the United States. Your gift on Good Shepherd Sunday will help support our newest seminarians as they prepare to answer God’s call to a journey of ministry in our diocese. You may use an envelope provided at the back of the church to make a donation if you like. Please make checks out to “The Catholic Foundation.”

My Lord Jesus Christ,
May your peace be with me.
In you, O Jesus, true peace,
May I have peace upon peace eternally.
Through you may I come to understanding,
There where, in gladness, I may see you in yourself.

Praying Our Alleluias
“We are Easter people and Alleluia is our song!” said St. John Paul II. Ironically, this famous quote was said during an Angelus message in November of 1986. Perhaps it’s not ironic, but rather wonderful, that St. JP II said this during the time of year furthest from Easter time: November. For we are always “Easter people,” whether we’re in the Easter season, Ordinary time, Advent, or even Lent. Even though we sometimes feel that we are literally re-enacting the Life of Christ throughout the year, we have to remember that no matter what time of year it is, Christ is risen!
That may be easier to accept than the idea that “Alleluia is our song.” Can it really be so, in a world torn by war, countries riven by poverty, churches still confronting sexual abuse, not to mention our own countless personal problems? How can we focus on the “Alleluia?”
One answer might be to remember that “Alleluia” is a form of “Hallelujah,” which comes from Hallelu (meaning praise) and Yah, referring to Yahweh. So, what can we praise God for? That’s where focusing on what we have, rather than what we don’t, comes into play. Even amid crisis and struggle, can we ask God to focus our hearts on what we have? It’s a difficult task, sometimes requiring an act of the will, but it’s essential. Think of Mary Magdalene on Easter Sunday morning. If she had remained in the tomb, focused on death, she would never have seen the Risen Lord. And she might never have said, “Alleluia!”            –James Martin, SJ

Ida B. Wells
Blessed Among Us
Champion of Justice (1862-1931)

Born into slavery in Mississippi, Ida B. Wells’s struggle against racial injustice began in 1884 when a train conductor tried to evict her from her first-class seat to make room for a white man. Her successful suit against the train company won her a national reputation, and she became editor of a Black newspaper in Memphis, The Free Speech and Headlight.
When, in 1892, three black men were lynched in Memphis, Wells was galvanized to action. In the years since Emancipation, lynching had become the ultimate form of white terrorism in the South. Though the pretext was often some alleged “outrage against (white) womanhood,” Wells conducted exhaustive research documenting the actual causes: failure to show proper deference to whites, registering to vote, “talking back,” complaining about work, or sheer bad luck. Whatever the reasons, it was a reminder that the underlying code of slavery lived on. Christian ministers, meanwhile, were generally oblivious to the parallels between this public violence and the death of Jesus on a cross.
Following her editorials, an outraged mob destroyed her press and would have lynched her, too, if she had been present. Settling in Chicago, she became a “journalist in exile,” tirelessly carrying on the fight against lynching, until her death on March 31, 1931. She did not live to see success (there were 28 recorded lynchings in 1931), but her courageous witness lit a torch that others carried across the generations. In 2022, Congress passed the Emmet Till Anti-Lynching Act.
“We submit all to the sober judgment of the Nation, confident that, in this cause, as well as all others, “Truth is mighty and will prevail.”Ida B. Wells

O Cross
O Cross, more worthy than cedar,
On you the life of the world was nailed,
On you Christ has triumphed;
Death has destroyed death!
Glory to you, Jesus, Savior,
Your cross gives us life!
Behold the tree of life
Where the innocent man bears our sins
In order to reconcile earth and heaven:
Come, let us adore!
Days of the Lord

For Holy Week
Born as a Son, led like a lamb,
Sacrificed like a sheep, buried as a man,
He rises from the dead as God,
Being by nature both God and man.
He is all things: when he judges, he is law,
When he teaches, Word, when he saves, grace,
When he begets, father, when his is begotten, son,
When he suffers, lamb, when he is buried, man,
When he rises, God, such is Jesus Christ!
To him be glory forever! Amen.

Great news about Protect Kids Colorado Initiatives: all three initiatives went well above the minimum (125k) signatures needed to secure their place on the 2026 November ballot. All three are now filed at the Secretary of State office for review and approval to the ballot.
***Over 170,000 signatures filed to Stop Human Trafficking #108
***Over 170,000 Signatures filed to Protect Girls Sports #109
***Over 164,000 to Prohibit Child Sex Change Surgery #110
This success is in large measure due to the effort from your help and parish leadership in facilitating signature collection of petitions. Our Catholic community make up at least 1/3 of all the signatures collected to protect children in Colorado!

St. Patrick’s Breastplate
I bind unto myself today the power of God
To hold and lead, his eye to watch,
His might to stay, his ear to harken to my need:
The wisdom of my God to teach, his hand to guide,
His shield to ward; the word of God to give me speech,
His heavenly host to be my guard.
Christ be with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ deep within me, Christ below me, Christ above me,
Christ at my right hand, Christ at my left hand,
Christ as I lie down, Christ as I arise, Christ as I stand,
Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks to me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me. -The Glenstal Book of Prayer.

Meal Blessing During Lent
Lord Jesus Christ, may our Lenten fasting turn us toward all
Our brothers and sisters who are in need. Bless this table, our good food,
And ourselves. Send us through Lent with good cheer, and bring us to the
Fullness of your Passover, now and forever. Amen.
