St. Paul describes the struggle for freedom in our hearts:

“For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. … For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for self-indulgence, but through love become slaves to one another. For the whole law is summed up in a single commandment, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself’” (Galatians 5:1,13-14).
The battle for goodness is nonstop in our own hearts — and in the fallen world. We have not only our hearts to contend with, but a world that consistently desires to choose what is less good, less noble, less excellent and less holy. In such a state of affairs, we are called to cooperate with God’s grace, understand our dignity, and fight for the freedom to pursue and thrive in what is true, good and beautiful in our world today. The fight is only optional if we’ve decided to compromise and accept waywardness and tyranny as the rule of the day. –Fr. Jeffery Kirby

Positive Peace
Scholars in the academic field of peace studies distinguish between “negative peace,” the absence of war and violent conflict, and “positive peace,” the conditions under which active human flourishing occurs. In societies that foster positive peace, people are unencumbered by active violence; have access to fundamental human rights such as healthy food, clean water, shelter, and education; and they also enjoy freedom of cultural and religious expression.
Internationally renowned peacebuilder John Paul Lederach said that “peacebuilding requires many levels of intervention, from grassroots to the international.” Religious organizations ranging from the local to the global play important roles in this peacebuilding. Pope John XXIII knew this, and consequently authored the encyclical Pacem in Terris in 1963 amid the Cold War. So did Pope Paul VI, who declared January 1, the Solemnity of Mary, the Mother of God, as a World Day of Peace. In other words, peacebuilding demands spiritual intervention, and this is one way we can play a role. Where do you feel called to direct your prayers for peace? –Renee LaReau

Did You Know?
The mission of the Ouray County Food Pantry is to meet the needs of the community. The goal is to serve families who are struggling with bills due to high gas prices, rent, utility bills and groceries that are more expensive every week. Due to the affordability crisis, even families and individuals with full time jobs are struggling to pay their bills each month. Soon, medical expenses may be much higher as well. Residents of Ouray County are automatically pre-qualified to receive this service. There is no means test and all are welcome. The Pantry would like to know how they can better serve the community in the future, so please offer your valuable feedback. The Pantry is open every Thursday from 12:30 to 3:30. War, Peace, and the Catholic Tradition
In recent weeks there has been a vibrant and robust debate within the US about the morality of launching and sustaining was against Iran. Catholic moral teaching has been at the center of this national dialogue, and the statements of Pope Leo XIV on the war with Iran have been welcomed by many Catholics, recast by some and totally rejected by others. Because the war is a highly volatile issue in our polarized society, it is particularly important that Catholic teaching be clear and well understood as we seek to move forward to peace.
In reality, the fundamental stance of the church toward war is that it must be avoided. Pope John XXIII proclaimed in “Pacem in Terris” that “it is hardly possible to imagine that in an atomic era war could be used as an instrument of justice.” Pope Paul VI journeyed to the UN to plead with the world: “Never again war, never again war!”
Pope John Paul II taught that war is never an appropriate way to settle disputes among peoples. “It has never been and it will never be.” Upon his election, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger chose the name Benedict XVI to tie his entire pontificate to that of Pope Benedict XV, who tried to end all war. And Pope Francis wrote in “Fratelli Tutti” that “we can no longer think of war as a solution, because its risks will probably always be greater than its supposed benefits. In view of this, it is very difficult nowadays to invoke the rational criteria elaborated in earlier centuries to speak of a just war. Never again war.”
It is in this light that we must view Pope Leo’s statement that “God does not bless any conflict. Anyone who is a disciple of Christ, the Prince of Peace, is never on the side of those who once wielded the sword and today drop bombs.” Pope Leo’s strenuous opposition to war in every form is not a product of his particular papacy or his personal viewpoint but rather reflects the constant refrain of the popes for the last 60 years. It is a refrain that is rooted in the fundamental command for disciples to be peacemakers and to act on the conviction that war is always antithetical to the Gospel. And it is a refrain that has been accelerated by the enormous destructive power of modern weapons that have the capacity to destroy whole civilizations and indeed, humanity itself.

Peace
Many people today are deprived of peace because their attention is dominated by their foreground. They do not realize that peace is actually quite near, but that it is in their background.
Our foreground, what we see and experience at any given time, is not the same as it was for our ancestors. In the past, the foreground might have been limited to family and neighbors in the context of a farm or village. An individual’s foreground expanded as the scope increased with business and travel.
Today, with the explosion of electronic media and the instant availability of news around the globe, our foreground is the whole world – and it is always changing. Whenever we think that things have calmed down and there is nothing to worry about, “Breaking News” brings us back to chaotic reality. What our ancestors would never have known about or would have found out about only after a solution had been found to a problem or crisis, we learn about as it happens.
Dominance of the foreground means that one is never at peace, and can never be at peace, because the foreground is always changing – every moment, every second. Good things are happening all over the world, as well, but they are rarely part of the instant news cycle.
To have peace, one’s life must be dominated not by the foreground but by the background. And what do I mean by that? One’s background, like a backbone, is a stable and unchanging philosophy or faith, an anchor that holds a life together. For Catholics, this background is faith in a loving God and Jesus Christ, our Savior, who govern all reality and is embodied in the sacred Tradition, based on Scripture and enshrined in the Creed. Unlike the foreground, which is always changing, this background is stable and unchanging. We engage completely in the life of the world, but our life is grounded in our unchanging faith. Staying rooted in our background gives us peace, no matter what is going on in the foreground.
God gave our ancestors in faith a way to remain dominated by the background by the institution of the Sabbath. Regularly, the whole community ceases ordinary business and reaffirms the priority of God. All that goes on in daily life and business is good, but it may lead us to think it is essential. Only one thing is necessary: God will take care of us even when we briefly lay down our tools and our control. This Sabbath plan was not only a gift to the Jewish people, but to everyone.
In the rule of St. Benedict, this regular affirmation of the priority of God is provided by the regular return to the Work of God, the Divine Office, several times a day. One’s personal assignment or commitment, the work of the day, is holy and good, but it is secondary to the Work of God. Letting go of our project and turning to God’s project brings us back to the unchanging presence behind the constantly changing world – and restores peace.

This year Bishop Berg is asking that the special collection for the weekend of May 16-17 be used to build a fund for aiding struggling parishes in the diocese. This collection replaces the May 10th special collection envelope for the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa. That collection was combined with the Black & Indian Missions collection in February. You may use the May 10th special collection envelope for this collection if you like. We are encouraged to follow the example of the early Christian Church who shared their resources for the support of ongoing evangelization and spread of the Gospel.

“When God Created Mothers”
When the Good Lord was creating mothers, He was into His sixth day of “overtime” when the angel appeared and said. “You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”
And God said, “Have you read the specs on this order?” She has to be completely washable, but not plastic. Have 180 moveable parts…all replaceable. Run on black coffee and leftovers. Have a lap that disappears when she stands up. A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair. And six pairs of hands.”
The angel shook her head slowly and said. “Six pairs of hands…. no way.”
“It’s not the hands that are causing me problems,” God remarked, “it’s the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have.”
“That’s on the standard model?” asked the angel. God nodded.
“One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, ‘What are you kids doing in there?’ when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn’t but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say. ‘I understand and I love you’ without so much as uttering a word.”
“God,” said the angel touching his sleeve gently, “Get some rest tomorrow….”
“I can’t,” said God, “I’m so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick…can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger…and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower.”
The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. “It’s too soft,” she sighed.
“But tough!” said God excitedly. “You can’t imagine what this mother can do or endure.”
“Can it think?”
Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise,” said the Creator.
Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek.
There’s a leak,” she pronounced. “I told You that You were trying to put too much into this model.”
It’s not a leak,” said the Lord, “It’s a tear.” “What’s it for?”
“It’s for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride.”

Not this one – When a woman who comes to Life Choices is considering abortion, the person talking with her sends a text requesting a prayer for that mom and baby. If you would like to support a mom in her moment of crisis, please consider joining the prayer text. It simply reads “not this one” when you receive it.

Prayer During the Easter Season
Heavenly Father and God of mercy,
We no longer look for Jesus among the dead,
For he is alive and has become the Lord of life.
From the waters of death you raise us with him
And renew your gift of life within us.
Increase in our minds and hearts
The risen life we share with Christ
And help us to grow as your people
Toward the fullness of eternal life with you.
