Radiating Christ
Dear Jesus, help me to spread
Your fragrance everywhere I go.
Flood my soul with your spirit and life.
Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly
That my life may be only a radiance of yours.
Shine through me and be so in me that every soul
I come in contact with may feel
Your presence in my soul.
Let them look up and see no longer me
But only Jesus!
Stay with me and then I will begin to shine as you shine,
So to shine as to be a light to others.
The light, O Jesus, will be all from you;
None of it will be mine.
It will be you, shining on others through me.
Let me thus praise you in the way that you love best,
By shining on those around me.
Let me preach you without preaching,
Not by words but by my example,
By the catching force of the sympathetic
Influence of what I do,
The evident fullness of the love
My heart bears to you, Amen
-Blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman

O Gracious Light
O gracious Light, pure brightness
of the everliving Father in heaven,
O Jesus Christ, holy and blessed!
Now as we come to the setting of the sun,
And our eyes behold the vesper light,
We sing thy praises, O God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Thou art worthy at all times to be praised by happy voices,
O Son of God, O Giver of life.
And to be glorified through all the worlds.
-Phos Hilaron

Vesper is an old-fashioned word. For a layperson like myself, I evokes images of bird-bones nuns at prayer in convents, or chanting monks in monasteries. But I like old-fashioned words. I try to preserve them in writing. I put them up like jam that may never be opened.

Vesper sounds like “whisper.” It is an apt rhyme for a prayer. Vespers, which comes from the Latin for “evening,” is a formal part of the Liturgy of the Hours. Prayed daily by many Catholics, both lay and consecrated, it continues the Jewish tradition of praying at dusk.

The setting sun transforms brightness of day into onset of night. The vesper light guides us from light to dark, from dusk that leads to dawn. Vesper light remembers day and anticipates night. If I seem preoccupied with the setting of the sun these days, it may be because I’ve just written a book about aging. More sunsets lie behind me that ahead.

                                                                             Teach Us to Pray
“Lord, teach me to be generous,” begins a prayer titled “The Prayer for Generosity”, known by countless people educated in Jesuit schools across the world. The prayer is traditionally attributed to St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit Order, but was most likely composed later.
The prayer also asks God to teach us “to serve you as you deserve, to give and not count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds.” It’s what you might call an aspirational prayer, because it sets out some high spiritual standards. Even some Jesuits quail at praying to “toil and not to seek for rest.” “That’s a prayer for burnout!” said one of my spiritual directors.

But asking for a generous heart and spirit are key for the life of the Christian disciple. And we need to ask for this gift because it’s easy to become stingy, narrow-minded, and turned in upon ourselves, especially in a world where selfishness and egocentrism are often the norm. Our natural inclination might be to think of ourselves first, our families and friends second, and then perhaps – if there’s any room left in our hearts – for those in need: the poor, the sick, the struggling.

Thus, St. Ignatius knew that we had to ask for this important grace – generosity.  It’s also something that he counsels for those on retreat. We pray to give ourselves to the retreat, or the prayer, generously. To be as open to God as we can be. A good way to begin a retreat or really any day, then, is by praying, “Lord, teach me to be generous.”

Praying to be Pilgrims of Hope

The Jubilee Year, with its theme “Pilgrims of Hope,” has just ended. In his papal bull announcing the Jubilee, Pope Francis invited the faithful to embrace hope, calling it “a virtue which must be sourced above all in the grace of God and in the fullness of His mercy.”

How can we, as this Jubilee Year ends, continue to embrace hope? For some, this might seem difficult. Financial woes, polarization in nations and in the Church and personal problems – with our health, in our family, at the workplace- can overwhelm us. Sometimes despair seems like the most rational response to the realities of life. But despair never comes from God. Hope always does.

We might think of the story of the Holy Family. We can imagine Joseph and Mary, even as recipients of astonishing graces, worrying. Mary, of course, was graced with the conception if Jesus. Joseph was graced with a dream. But as they journeyed to Bethlehem , and later to Egypt, there must have been moments when they said, “How can this work?”

What enables them to hope is the confidence that “the grace of God” is with them. Sometimes all it takes to move from despair to hope is noticing signs of God’s presence – and remembering times in the past when things looked bleak, but we survived. Mary and Joseph were pilgrims of hope. We can be too.     James Martin, S.J.

Be yourself! Everyone else is taken.

                                                                              Winter Thoughts
Now in the New Year, on January 25, we celebrate the Conversion of St. Paul. A devout, zealous man, he rides on the road to Damascus. On that road he is taken down and granted a vision. The Kingdom of God, the place where heaven meets earth, the center of his faith, changes. He sees a brilliant radiance: the face of Jesus Christ. Paul’s journey of conversion now begins. For some twelve more years Paul studies and prays, through a virtual winter of solitude, being prepared for the road ahead. Then he returns to the nascent Christian community in Jerusalem. And then into the world, carrying the Gospel of Christ, crucified, resurrected, and present amongst us.

Embracing the winter respite opens invisible doors to the future. We are on the long journey of conversion, with its ups and downs. The Holy Spirit is working for and within us, and it is time to bring this to mind. Deep thinking is in order. Follow every idea through. There are nets to be abandoned, and new steps to be taken. The coming springtime is inevitable. Let’s allow ourselves a time-out while the sap is still dormant, to take stock and recharge. The road to grace is open, and renewal is on the way!                                                                                                    -Bishop Berg

From the Bishop’s Desk:
With the winter comes a respite for some hopeful, productive downtime, taking stock and recharging. There’s time to evaluate life and make changes. For that, we’re having a nice winter this year. A little snow and some cold. It’s not as it was, growing up in eastern Montana, when I delivered newspapers in some bitter minus 50 degree weather. Even then, I loved the winter, when nature went into hibernation; and a world of new possibilities took shape. A time of peace, silent and reflective.

The time for interior reflection is here. The Sunday liturgical readings reveal Jesus calling his disciples, preparing for the road ahead. The goal is to proclaim that the Kingdom of God is at hand. Jesus chooses the most unlikely people for the mission. Simon, Andrew, James, and John are hardworking fishermen with much to learn.

Something about Jesus proves irresistible to them. They are drawn in and offered a new path with no guarantees. They make their choice; they “abandoned their nets and followed him (Mk 1:14)”. Within days these fishermen will be amongst swarming crowds, beholding amazing wonders: demons driven out, the sick healed, the challenges of a new message of truth and compassion proclaimed in word and deed. God loves us all! There will be difficulties, miracles, and suffering ahead, transforming the journey of life, as it formerly was, into a new experience of joy.                –Bishop Berg

Saints Among Us:
St. Carlo Acutis died in 2006 when he was just 15 years old. Carlo loved video games. However, he understood their dangers and so limited himself to playing only 2 hours a week. Instead, he focused on building relationships, spending time with family and friends and developing meaningful hobbies. He even taught himself coding to create a website dedicated to Eucharistic miracles. The saintly teen modeled moderation in the use of technology and can encourage us to consider how to be more intentional about focusing on the people God has placed in our lives.             –Faith Catholic

The Jubilee Prayer

Father in heaven,

May the faith you have given us

In your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,

And the flame of charity enkindled

In our hearts by the Holy Spirit,

Reawaken in us the blessed hope

For the coming of your Kingdom.

May your grace transform us

Into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.

May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos

In the sure expectation of a new heaven and a new earth,

When, with the powers of Evil vanquished,

Your glory will shine eternally.

May the grace of the Jubilee

Reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,

A yearning for the treasures of heaven.

May that same grace spread

The joy and peace of our Redeemer

Throughout the earth.

To you our God, eternally blessed,

Be glory and praise forever. Amen

St. John XXIII’s Christmas Prayer
O sweet Child of Bethlehem,
grant that we may share with all our hearts
In this profound mystery of Christmas.
Put into the hearts of men and women this peace
For which they sometimes seek so desperately
And which you alone can give them.
Help them to know one another better,
And to live as brothers and sisters,
Children of the same Father.
Reveal to them also your beauty, holiness and purity.
Awaken in their hearts
Love and gratitude for your infinite goodness.
Join them all together in your love.
And give us your heavenly peace. Amen

This Profound Mystery

“O sweet Child”. For those who have had the privilege of holding a newborn baby, there’s nothing more precious or vulnerable than a newborn child. Consider how carefully and gently one must support a newborn infant’s head while cradling him or her in the fold of one’s arm. At Christmas, we celebrate that God, the Creator of the universe, allowed himself to be held in such a manner. The “profound mystery of Christmas” is that the all-powerful One makes himself vulnerable out of love. In a world where humans desperately seek to assert power or gain peace by economic or military force, St. John XXIII invites us to ponder and imitate God who, out of love, makes himself small and vulnerable. It is in embracing Christ’s humility that we will find the peace God alone can offer.

Listening Through Advent

One irony of contemporary life is that just as the Advent readings encourage us to still ourselves to better hear God’s voice, the “Christmas Industrial Complex” becomes increasingly loud. Even before the bags of Halloween candy disappear from stores, we hear “Silent Night” followed by “Frosty the Snowman” as we shop.

Developing the ability to listen, a key Benedictine value, is difficult at any time, but becomes both more difficult and more important during Advent. I’m grateful for the reminders provided by the Scriptures during this season, exhorting us to tamp down our impatience and be willing to wait, which is an essential part of listening.

Waiting means recognizing that we don’t yet have the full story and listening for what God wishes to reveal. Going to church to hear the Word of God spoken, chanted, and sung helps us to still the world’s clamor and our own inner cacophony. Listening helps us recognize how tired we are, how much we need God to heal us and our weary world.

No small part of listening is being willing to let go of our tidy schemes and allow God to surprise us. One year I had to go to a mall one week before Christmas. I wasn’t heeding the siren call of just a few shopping days left, but family members had been slow to tell me what they wanted. For my mother, then in her 80s, it was a new compact, which was easy to find. But a niece told me her youngest daughter wanted something I could find only at the Disney store. That was the last place I wanted to go, but I went, made my way past huge displays of plastic and glitter, and found the desired item.

I was waiting in line to purchase it when suddenly a tall teenager elbowed past me and approached the clerk. She held a stuffed animal and, weeping, told the clerk that it no longer played the song she liked. My annoyance abated when I recognized that this was a person with special needs. I spotted her father standing nearby and told him that my late sister was much like his daughter, and I was glad to see the clerk treating her so kindly. She had immediately taken the broken toy, told the girl not to worry, and handed her a new one. When the girl, now smiling broadly, approached her father and me, she asked if she could hug me. Of course, I said.

An errand I had resented had just become an Advent blessing, reminding me that the divine presence is indeed everywhere – even in a Disney store crowded with Christmas shoppers. God had asked me to pay attention and listen, and in return had given me a blessing I never could have expected or imagined.                                                                                                      –Kathleen Norris

A Special Pastoral Message from the USCCB
As pastors, we the bishops of the US are bound to our people by ties of communion and compassion in Our Lord. We are disturbed when we see among a climate of fear and anxiety around questions of profiling and immigration enforcement. We are saddened by the state of contemporary debate and the vilification of immigrants. We are concerned about the conditions in detention centers and the lack of access to pastoral care. We lament that some immigrants in the US have arbitrarily lost their legal status. We are troubled by threats against the sanctity of houses of worship and the special nature of hospitals and schools. We are grieved when we meet parents who fear being detained when taking their children to school and when we try to console family members who have already been separated from their loved ones.

Generations of immigrants have made enormous contributions to the well-being of our nation. We as Catholic bishops love our country and pray for its peace and prosperity. For this very reason, we feel compelled now in this environment to raise our voices in defense of God-given dignity.

Catholic teaching exhorts nations to recognize the fundamental dignity of all persons. We bishops advocate for a meaningful reform of our nation’s immigration laws and procedures. Human dignity and national security are not in conflict. Both are possible if people of good will work together. We recognize that nations have a responsibility to regulate their borders and establish a just and orderly immigration system for the sake of the common good. Without such processes, immigrants face the risk of trafficking and other forms of exploitation. Safe and legal pathways serve as an antidote to such risks.

The Church’s teaching rests on concern for the human person, as created in the image and likeness of God (Gn. 1:27). As pastors, we look to Sacred Scripture and the example of the Lord himself, where we find the wisdom of God’s compassion. The priority of Our Lord is for those who are most vulnerable: the widow, the orphan, the poor, and the stranger (Zc 7:10). In Our Lord, we see the One who became poor for our sake (2Co 8:9), and we see the One who is found in the least of these (Mt 25). The Church’s concern for neighbor and our concern here for immigrants is a response to the Lord’s command to love as He has loved (Jn 13:34). To our immigrant brothers and sisters, we stand with you in your suffering, since, when one member suffers, all suffer (1Co 12:26). You are not alone!

We note with gratitude that so many of our clergy, religious, and lay faithful already assist immigrants in meeting their basic human needs. We urge all people of good will to continue and expand such efforts. We oppose the indiscriminate mass deportation of people. We pray for an end to dehumanizing rhetoric and violence, whether directed at immigrants or at law enforcement. We pray that the Lord may guide the leaders of our nation. In our dialogue with the leaders of our nation, we will continue to advocate for meaningful immigration reform. As disciples of the Lord, we remain people of hope, and hope does not disappoint. May Our Lady of Guadalupe enfold us all in her loving care and draw us ever closer to the heart of Christ. –USCCB Plenary Meeting, Nov 12, 2025
