Notice Regarding the Declaration of Schism of the Society o St. Pius X (SSPX)

Following the illicit episcopal consecrations conducted in Econe, Switzerland, without a pontifical mandate and against the direct warnings of the Holy See, the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a formal decree declaring the SSPX to be in a state of formal schism. Four bishops were consecrated by the bishops of the SSPX without the concurrence & permission of Pope Leo & so now that society has been declared to be in schism from the Catholic Church. This makes the Sacraments administered by their bishops & priests invalid. As a result, Catholics should not participate in their services, as directed by Pope Leo.

This Friday is First Friday. There will be Adoration, Benediction and recitation of the Rosary after the 7:30 am Mass, all for the intention of more vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

Grace Matters More

Follow the rules if they’re good. If they apply. Unless they keep you from following a higher law. Until they’re no longer life-giving. But remember that grace matters more. Following the rules has gotten a lot of people into deep trouble: people who were just following orders, just doing their job, just not questioning.

Following the rules matters when you’re learning to love what the law protects. When you’re learning a skill – painting, piano-playing, tennis, scientific experimentation – rules keep your lines straight and your colors from running. They get the ball to the other side of the net, the sheet music to sound, and the sentence to make sense. They keep the experiment from blowing up – sometimes literally. But just beyond the rules lies a play space where rules can be bent and even broken, the moves restyled, the tools put to new purpose, the intuitive leaps honored. If you go there before you’ve walked the path through the forest of rules, you’re likely to be disappointed or hurt, or, worse, do damage. If you go there disciplined by the rules, your play will be productive and your efforts richly enjoyable.

When the laws of God are, in fact, at issue, more is at stake. “You shall follow my rules and keep my statutes and walk in them. I am the Lord your God,” we read in Leviticus. God’s law is just and righteous, given for guidance in justice and love, gracious enough for David to sing, “Oh, how I love thy law!” So when Jesus breaks the Sabbath, those who love the law are scandalized. They – and we, as we learn to rely more on relationship and less on rules – have to come up against the limits of the law. At the outer edge of those limits stands a person, saying “Follow me. I am the Way.” Once we arrive at that encounter, the journey is less and less about following rules and more and more about the love that is both its motive and its purpose.
