Praying Our Alleluias
“We are Easter people and Alleluia is our song!” said St. John Paul II. Ironically, this famous quote was said during an Angelus message in November of 1986. Perhaps it’s not ironic, but rather wonderful, that St. JP II said this during the time of year furthest from Easter time: November. For we are always “Easter people,” whether we’re in the Easter season, Ordinary time, Advent, or even Lent. Even though we sometimes feel that we are literally re-enacting the Life of Christ throughout the year, we have to remember that no matter what time of year it is, Christ is risen!
That may be easier to accept than the idea that “Alleluia is our song.” Can it really be so, in a world torn by war, countries riven by poverty, churches still confronting sexual abuse, not to mention our own countless personal problems? How can we focus on the “Alleluia?”
One answer might be to remember that “Alleluia” is a form of “Hallelujah,” which comes from Hallelu (meaning praise) and Yah, referring to Yahweh. So, what can we praise God for? That’s where focusing on what we have, rather than what we don’t, comes into play. Even amid crisis and struggle, can we ask God to focus our hearts on what we have? It’s a difficult task, sometimes requiring an act of the will, but it’s essential. Think of Mary Magdalene on Easter Sunday morning. If she had remained in the tomb, focused on death, she would never have seen the Risen Lord. And she might never have said, “Alleluia!”            –James Martin, SJ
