This Saturday, September 5th, is the last Saturday night Mass in Ouray for the season.

Today is Food Bank Sunday. Non-perishable food items as well as monetary donations may be left on the altar.     

                                                                    Prayer for the Gift of Rest
“We’re human beings”, my novice director used to say, “not human doings.” As I understood him, this meant a few things: First, we can’t earn God’s love by doing things, no matter how noble. (That’s a variation on heresy called Pelagianism.) Second, our lives are not simply about action, but also contemplation. And third, we can’t be working and “doing” all the time. We need some rest and time for prayer and contemplation.

That last insight is hard for many people to agree with, let alone put into-sorry-action. Yet even Jesus needed to rest from time to time. The Gospels often speak of him “withdrawing” to get a break from the disciples and, even more often, from the crowds that press in on him, particularly as his “fame” spreads. And that rest is not just for him alone. In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus say to the disciples, “Come away to a deserted place all by yourselves and rest a while” (6:31).

Maybe you’re a busy person reading this and thinking, “Of course I want some rest! But where do I find it?” This is where praying for rest may come in. Asking for good things from God is one of the most common ways of looking at prayer. One of those good things, because it helps to restore us, is rest. Can you ask God to show you ways to rest, open up paths to rest, and, in fact, give you rest? In the middle of a busy life, perhaps you can ask God for that grace, and then be attentive to the ways that God has of making you, as the psalmist says, “lie down in green pastures” to “restore your soul” (Ps 23).                                                                                         –James Martin, S.J.
